Sometimes you know exactly what is bothering you. You might be frustrated, worried, overwhelmed, impatient or lacking confidence. Other times, you simply feel out of balance without being able to put your finger on why.
Bach Flower Remedies are a complementary wellbeing practice that focuses on these emotional states.
Developed by English physician Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s, the Bach system consists of 38 individual flower remedies. Each remedy is associated with a particular emotional pattern or state of mind, and remedies can be selected according to how a person is feeling at a particular point in their life.
What are Bach Flower Remedies?
Bach Flower Remedies are liquid preparations made from flowers and plants. The system was developed by Dr Edward Bach, who believed that emotional states such as fear, uncertainty, impatience, loneliness or feeling overwhelmed could affect a person's overall wellbeing.
Rather than choosing a remedy according to a physical diagnosis, Bach's approach looks at the person's emotional experience.
There are 38 remedies in the original Bach system. Some of the better-known remedies include Rescue Remedy, which is actually a combination of five Bach remedies, as well as individual remedies such as Mimulus for known fears, Aspen for vague or unexplained fears, Impatiens for impatience and White Chestnut for repetitive or unwanted thoughts.
The remedies are generally taken in small diluted amounts, either individually or combined according to what someone is experiencing.
The idea is quite simple: instead of trying to find one remedy for a particular illness, you look at the emotional state behind what you are experiencing and choose accordingly.
What can Bach Flower Remedies help with?
Bach Flower Remedies are most commonly used as a form of emotional support.
People may choose them during periods when they are experiencing things such as:
- everyday stress and feeling overwhelmed
- worry or nervousness
- specific fears
- difficulty switching off repetitive thoughts
- impatience or irritability
- lack of confidence
- indecision
- feeling emotionally drained
- difficulty adjusting to change
- grief or emotional upset
- feeling overly responsible for other people
- difficulty setting boundaries
- feeling stuck in a particular emotional pattern
The important point is that Bach Flower Remedies are traditionally selected according to the emotional state rather than the situation itself.
For example, two people going through a stressful period might choose completely different remedies. One person may be struggling with fear, another with uncertainty, while someone else may be unable to stop mentally going over the same thoughts.
This is why a Bach Flower consultation usually involves talking about how you are feeling, what has been happening in your life and which emotional patterns are most noticeable.
How do Bach Flower Remedies work?
This is where it is important to separate the traditional Bach system from what has been scientifically established.
Dr Bach developed his system around the idea that the remedies could help bring emotional states back into balance. The Bach Centre continues to describe the remedies in terms of particular emotional characteristics and states of mind.
Research into Bach Flower Remedies is still developing, and the findings are mixed. Some controlled clinical trials have found no significant difference between Bach remedies and placebo, while other randomised, placebo-controlled studies have reported significantly greater improvements in areas such as anxiety, sleep and stress. A 2021 double-blind clinical trial, for example, found significantly greater improvements in anxiety, sleep quality, binge eating and resting heart rate in participants receiving a Bach flower preparation compared with placebo. More research, particularly larger trials using individually selected remedies, is needed to establish how consistently these effects can be reproduced.
For that reason, Bach Flower Remedies are best viewed as a complementary wellbeing practice rather than a medical treatment.
Bach Flower Remedies and stress
Stress is one of the reasons people become interested in flower remedies.
When life becomes busy, it is easy to keep pushing through without really noticing what is happening emotionally. You might be functioning normally while feeling tense, impatient, worried or mentally exhausted underneath.
Taking some time to identify those feelings can be useful in itself.
For someone who is constantly thinking about unfinished tasks, for example, the focus might be on repetitive thoughts. Someone who is taking on too much for other people may instead notice difficulty saying no. Another person may be dealing with fear about an upcoming event.
Bach Flower Remedies can be incorporated into a wider wellbeing routine alongside practices such as meditation, breathwork, relaxation, journaling or other forms of self-care.
Can Bach Flower Remedies be combined?
Yes. The traditional Bach system includes individual remedies, and several remedies can be combined when someone feels that more than one emotional pattern applies.
A personalised blend might therefore contain several flower remedies chosen around what is happening for that person at the time.
The combination can also be revisited as circumstances change. If the emotional picture changes, the selection may change too.
This makes Bach Flower Remedies quite different from taking the same supplement every day for a general health goal. The focus is on the person's current emotional state.
Are Bach Flower Remedies safe?
Bach Flower Remedies are highly diluted preparations and are generally considered low risk. However, products can differ in their ingredients, and some preparations contain alcohol as a preservative.
They should not be used as a replacement for medical care or prescribed medication. If you have a diagnosed medical or mental health condition, or if you are experiencing persistent or severe symptoms, speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Why do people choose Bach Flower Remedies?
For many people, the appeal is the simplicity of the system.
There are no complicated routines to learn. You don't need to spend an hour doing anything. The starting point is simply asking yourself: How am I actually feeling right now?
That question can sometimes reveal more than expected.
Perhaps you have been unusually impatient. Perhaps you are worrying about something that hasn't happened yet. Maybe you are struggling to make a decision, feeling emotionally exhausted or finding it difficult to let go of something that happened in the past.
Whether you view the remedies themselves as having an effect or you value the process of reflection that comes with using them, they can be used as one part of a broader approach to emotional wellbeing.
Bach Flower Remedies as part of a wellbeing session
Bach Flower Remedies can also be combined with other complementary practices.
For example, a session might include Bach Flower Remedies alongside breathwork, Reiki, meditation or other relaxation practices. Each modality approaches the experience from a different direction, and the combination can create a more personal wellbeing session.
The aim is not to diagnose or treat illness. It is to give you time to slow down, identify what is going on emotionally and choose practices that support you through the period you are currently experiencing.
Bach Flower Remedies are a complementary wellbeing practice and should not replace medical diagnosis or treatment.
Bach Flower Remedies can also be combined with Reiki as part of a more personalised wellbeing session. Reiki offers a calming, relaxing experience, while the Bach consultation gives you an opportunity to look more closely at the emotional patterns or feelings you may be experiencing and create an individual flower blend to take home. If you’re interested in exploring both approaches, Reiki and Bach Flower Remedy sessions are available in Dubai, with sessions offered in the studio or from the comfort of your own home.
